Apple has issued a statement today that programs available for the iPhone to SIM unlock it could cause "irreparable damage" to the device. Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software...
"Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorized iPhone unlocking programs available on the Internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed."
by StateTheObvious:
Apparently, it's not the unlocking that will damage your phone, it's the Apple update

"The iPhone is a computer. If you own a computer you have the right to install software on it. You have the right to choose which internet service provider to use to connect online.
If the company who made the computer (Apple) doesn't like the fact you've made choices that they don't agree with, they DO NOT HAVE the right to sabotage your hardware rendering it worthless. This simply is a rumor or if it isn't an entire legal division at Apple will get the axe for suggesting something so ludicrous. No judge will hear Apple out as they lobby for what they believe is their right to cause millions of dollars in property damage."
